It’s a very good sign to find a big crowd of customers at a gelateria just after it opens for the day. Which is exactly what we saw when we rocked up to Mastika.
Opening in mid 2021, the jungle-themed Mastika is an absolute riot of colour set against a deep green background. Vines dangle from the ceiling and large brightly hued plants contribute to the overall jungle effect.
Mastika’s gelati are inspired by the Mediterranean. Flavours like baklava, rosewater and the signature mastika, all made on-site. The menu of the day offers around two dozen flavours from a larger repertoire, including dairy-based gelati and vegan sorbetti. All served in cups, cones or tubs to take away. Smoothies and shakes are also available.
But what exactly is mastika? It is a flavouring popular across the eastern Mediterranean, sourced from the aromatic resin of the mastic tree, grown on the Greek island of Chios.
Benny’s choice: dark chocolate sorbetti paired with pistachio gelato – a classic combination that Mastika does exceptionally well.
Of course I had to have the mastika – I adore the flavour, but I totally accept that it does not appeal to everyone. The mastika gelato is lovely, quite floral but not overpoweringly so. It pairs beautifully with an excellent berry cheesecake gelato.
The friendly servers are well trained in wielding the traditional paddles for serving gelati – no scoops at Mastika! And the gelati has that gorgeous elastic texture that we love. Generous serves and great flavours – no wonder Mastika is so popular among the locals.
