Okay Lucy, Mornington

Gelato by the seaside. It’s a natural combination, even on a bitterly cold winter’s day. Despite the bleak weather conditions, Mornington was a-buzz. But it was a little quieter on the Esplanade near our target, Okay Lucy, just around the corner from the lunchtime action in Main Street.

Peach-hued Okay Lucy has been open for a couple of years now. Its gelati are made in small batches with a focus on natural ingredients sourced from local Mornington Peninsula producers. Such as honey from Pure Peninsula Honey, strawberries from Sunny Ridge Farm, and coffee from Mornington roaster Commonfolk Coffee.

Shiny lidded pozzetti are used to store the gelati at Okay Lucy. This traditional approach retains freshness by protecting the gelati from air exposure. Plus, as all gelato experts know, pozzetti enhance gelato flavours due to their slightly higher storage temperature.

On the day we visited, there were 17 flavours on offer, with dairy and non-dairy (vegan) options. The flavours change regularly, depending upon what is in season, except for a clutch of core flavours – chocolate gelato, vanilla gelato and lemon sorbetto – which are always on the menu. All served in cups, cones or tubs to take away.

Star flavour of the day was cherry ripe gelato. This was a gourmet version of the classic cherry, coconut and chocolate combination, enhanced by a gorgeous amarena (sour) cherry with coconut and shards of dark chocolate.

A very close second was the fruity blood orange sorbetto – awesomely good with a beautiful creamy texture, and an ideal pairing for Okay Lucy’s great chocolate gelato.

Nut flavours are always a good test of gelato excellence. Our usual go-to nut flavour – pistachio – wasn’t on the menu that day but Okay Lucy’s classic hazelnut gelato was outstanding.

Super friendly service from the lovely Abby, and generously sized serves. Flavours were consistently excellent, and the textures were just perfect.

And as an added bonus, Okay Lucy’s vending machine dispenses 24/7 gelato in small dixie cups. Ideal for any gelato emergency.

Our rating: outstanding
