Duo Duo’s open front, tables spilling onto the footpath, and prime spot right in the lively pocket around Strathfield station give it an easy, neighbourhood energy. Strathfield is Duo Duo’s second gelateria, with the gelati still made in the original Roselands location.
First impression: we love the bold black on white graphic design, the work of Sydney-based illustrator Felix Saw. Second impression: the server… wasn’t exactly radiating sunshine at first. But once we started talking gelato, he turned out to be very engaging.
Duo Duo’s gelato menu leans towards Asian influences, with the 14 flavours – stored in shiny lidded pozzetti – changing from time to time. Cones or cups or tubs to take away.
My choices:
- Pandan with a Passion – pandan gelato with real pandan pieces, rippled through with passionfruit and coconut dacquoise. Awesomely good.
- Mango sorbetto – everything I love about mango, with that tropical vibe that makes it my favourite fruit.
Benny picked:
- Yuzu lychee sorbetto – star flavour of the day. Sharp citrusy tang and not too sweet.
- Kuki triple chocolate – milk chocolate and brown butter gelato with big chunks of chocolate cookie. Benny’s verdict: would be even better with dark chocolate (but he’s a dark chocolate purist).
For those after something a bit more indulgent, Duo Duo is known for its fried ice cream extravaganzas. Plus it has a range of intriguing drinks – “milky” lattes and teas, and “fruity” fizzes.
Duo Duo focuses on Asian style flavours, done exceptionally well. The yuzu lychee sorbetto was our standout flavour, however everything we tried was excellent. The buzzy neighbourhood is also a great location for wandering with your gelato.
Would happily go back – and next time check out the fried ice cream options.
