Scoopydoo Gelato and Cake Shop, Malvern

Melbourne is out of lockdown! And we’re super keen to continue exploring Melbourne’s gelaterie. But our excitement at returning to a new normal is tinged with a touch of sadness – some of our favourite places didn’t make it through. Fingers crossed we will see those talented gelato makers popping up somewhere again soon.

There must be something about gelato – so many of the gelato makers we meet are lovely people, passionate about their craft. Just like Michael at Malvern’s Scoopydoo.

Michael makes all the gelati on site each day. He also creates extravagant gelato cakes – ideal for birthday celebrations for the young at heart.

Around two dozen flavours are on the daily menu, dairy-based gelati and vegan sorbetti, served in cups, cones or tubs to take away.

Classic combination: pistachio gelato and lemon sorbetto at Scoopydoo
A classic combination: pistachio gelato with lemon sorbetto.

With lofty ceilings and a huge space in the Glenferrie Road shop, Scoopydoo has loads of room for gelato counters and seating. At the time of our visit, just before Melbourne’s latest lockdown, Michael talked about his plans for redecorating. This may not have happened yet – totally understandable given lockdown circumstances – but brightening up the interior will be very welcome.

But our focus is on Scoopydoo’s gelato.

Dark chocolate and blood orange sorbetti.

We picked two classic combinations. Pistachio gelato and lemon sorbetto for me, and a rich dark chocolate sorbetto paired with blood orange sorbetto for Benny.

Gosh we have missed gelato over the past few months.

Our rating: excellent

Super friendly service, freshly made gelato and great location right in the middle of Malvern’s Glenferrie Road precinct. Open until 10pm on weekends for that late-night gelato fix.

UPDATE: Scoopydoo closed in August 2022
