Genuine Sicilian gelato chef? Beachside location with sunny aspect? Big range of flavours including vegan options? Super friendly service? Gelato UNOU ticks all the boxes.
Seaford has a great beach, even if it doesn’t have the spectacular views of the Amalfi coast. And now it has a lovely little gelateria. Gelato UNOU opened just before the start of winter. Its red and white striped exterior is easy to spot.
Just an easy stroll across Nepean Highway to the beach and Seaford pier, but on a bitterly cold and windy midwinter day the delights of Port Phillip Bay did not have much appeal. Too cold even for Gelato UNOU’s outdoor seating, but inside the shop was toasty warm. Inside, one wall holds a huge photographic mural (Positano perhaps? Unfortunately our friendly server could not provide any details), with more seats and tables.
The two dozen gelato flavours include dairy and non-dairy options, with all the sorbets being vegan. The gelato is served in cups or cones, or tubs to take away. The menu also extends to gelato cakes, Dutch pancakes, shakes and spiders. The gelato is made daily onsite.
The friendly server was very generous with samples – it was a quiet day and Benny and I tasted almost every one of those two dozen flavours. Overall, we thought the dairy-based flavours were better than the sorbets.
Our friendly server was also very flexible with servings – happy to offer two flavours in a single scoop, or four flavours in a double scoop. And the servings were super generous.
Benny enjoyed his pistachio gelato, liberally studded with crushed nuts. I picked chilli chocolate, paired with strawberries and cream gelato. I had also tasted the strawberry sorbet, but the dairy-based strawberries and cream had a much more mellow flavour – made from fresh strawberries. The chilli chocolate was very powerful – rich and dark, with a strong punch of heat from the chilli. Probably better as a smaller portion.
