Being rated the world’s second best city in 2019 (after New York City, according to Time Out) must consider a lot of factors that us Melburnians cherish – food, culture, nightlife, community, happiness. We reckon it is no coincidence that gelati ticks so many of those boxes – locals don’t need to travel too far to enjoy some great gelati. And now we have a new gelateria in Melbourne, Brunswick’s Gelateria Bico.
It opened in January, in the bottom of a new residential development, just off Sydney Road and close to Brunswick station. With windows along two sides, the gelateria is filled with loads of natural light. There is room inside for several tables and chairs, with more outside on the footpath.
Gelateria Bico has around 20 flavours on its menu, with dairy and non-dairy (sorbetti) options, served in cups, cones or tubs to take away. There is also granita, gelato cannolo and house-made tartufo. Or you can opt for just a coffee.
It’s a family business, with everything made on-site. The gelati is stored in shiny lidded pozzetti, to retain freshness. The fruit flavours are all based on fresh produce – Benny couldn’t resist Gelateria Bico’s fig sorbetto, just finished churning, which he paired with ricotta and citrus gelato. The latter was the star of the day – rich and creamy, with strips of citrus peel providing a tangy contrast.
My choice: hazelnut gelato, with a mango and passionfruit sorbetto. Great flavours, beautiful creamy textures.
Those apartment dwellers above Gelateria Bico are very fortunate to have such great gelati so close!
