Carrello del Gelato, Oriental Bay, New Zealand

My favourite gelato flavour? I have a handful of go-to flavours that I always find difficult to resist: raspberry sorbetto is definitely in that league. And on a recent trip to Wellington, I tasted a great example from Carrello del Gelato – intense tart berriness and lovely creamy texture. Sheer bliss.

Wellington had turned on some spectacular weather for my visit. Glorious sunshine, and a gentle breeze.  Perfect for a stroll from central Wellington along the water’s edge to Oriental Bay – a great walk to refresh and regroup. The harbour view is spectacular, and on a perfect day the water sparkles in the sunshine. Plus there is the added attraction of checking out a gelateria, Carrello del Gelato.

Carrello has been around for just over 15 years, starting with just a gelato cart, later expanding into wholesale production, and in 2015 opening a shopfront gelateria. It’s a great location – across the road from the beach, perfect for indulging in summertime treats. Waffles, affogato and pizza are also available.

The modest pastel-hued shop has two separate rooms, one with the gelato counter and space for just a few chairs, and an adjoining room being a real 1970s throwback, scattered with beanbags.

One of my favourites - raspberry sorbetto - paired with the seasonally appropriate Christmas pudding gelato.

There are over 50 gelati flavours in Carrello’s repertoire, with an emphasis on local ingredients. Just 16 of those flavours are chosen for the daily menu, including dairy and non-dairy options, with the gelati served in cups, cones or tubs to take away. According to the friendly server, chocolate is the most popular – the dark chocolate sorbetto looks particularly luscious.

Given the season, it seemed appropriate to pick the Christmas pudding gelato. A lovely spicy cinnamon gelato, with a generous amount of plump dried fruit. A great match for the aforementioned raspberry sorbetto.

And it was no surprise to discover that Carrello’s raspberry sorbetto won a gold medal at the NZ Ice Cream awards. Many of Carrello’s other flavours – including that Kiwi favourite, feijoa – are also award winners.

Carrello del Gelato is right opposite the beach on Oriental Parade.

Our rating: outstanding

Great gelati, generous serves, good prices (NZD6.50 for two flavours of artisan gelati) and super friendly service, at a beachside location. Who could ask for more?
