Hello Gelo, Yarraville

Just a short stroll away from the art deco marvel of Yarraville’s Sun Theatre is a modest little gelateria, Hello Gelo.

No flashy designer fitout. A couple of seats outside on the footpath, a few more inside. A wall festooned with posters for upcoming gigs. Lots of bright orange.

Hello Gelo has been in Yarraville for eight years. It calls itself an ice cream parlour, but according to the friendly owner, the ice cream is low-fat Italian style, so it definitely counts as gelato.

Yarraville Sun Theatre
The art deco glory of Yarraville’s Sun Theatre. Hello Gelo is just a couple of minutes walk away.

The menu includes gelati, slushies, milk shakes and even spiders (now that’s an old-fashioned treat you don’t see everyday).  There are over 70 flavours – both dairy and non-dairy (sorbetto) – in Hello Gelo’s repertoire, with 20 available at any time. Regulars include vanilla, chocolate, lemon and Hello Gelo’s most popular flavour – salted caramel.

The gelati is available in cones or cups, or you can buy packs to take home.

The friendly owner makes all the gelati on site. Most of the gelati is based on fresh ingredients, however there are a couple that use natural pastes and colourings due to difficulties in sourcing the raw ingredients.

We were surprised that there was no pistachio or hazelnut, but something had to make way for the Christmas specials – plum pudding, Turkish delight and zabaglione. But on such a warm day Benny and I were leaning towards the gelati made from fresh fruit.

Hello Gelo - caramelised fig gelato and strawberry sorbet
Caramelised fig gelato paired with strawberry sorbet – both made from fresh fruit.

Before hitting the fruit flavours we sampled some coconut gelato swirled through with a white chocolate ganache – definitely one for white chocolate fans.

Benny adores figs, so caramelised fig was an easy choice for him. He paired it with strawberry. I went tropical and picked two of the sorbets – mango and passionfruit.

Two sorbets based on beautiful fresh fruit: mango and passionfruit.

All tasted fantastic, packed with fruity goodness. And the servings were enormous. Excellent value for money.

Note that if you plan to visit the Sun Theatre, and catch an evening show, Hello Gelo does not stay open late (depending on the season). Best to grab your gelato fix before the movie.

Hello Gelo - gelato cabinet
Not much space in the shop but there is some extra seating upstairs at Hello Gelo.

Update: Sad news. Hello Gelo closed in June 2021, but tubs are available at weekend pop-ups. Check out their Facebook or Instagram for the next date!

Our rating: excellentExcellent gelato, super friendly service and great value for money.
