Brazen Dessert Bar, Fairfield

It’s a big step to give away the long hours and hard work of high-flying corporate careers for the long hours and hard work of the food service industry, but Caroline and George from Brazen Dessert Bar did just that. And after three years they are still in love with the challenge.

Luscious brownies are their specialty, but they also make their own gelati. And that’s why Benny and I were in Fairfield Village.

Brazen is a cosy place. Bearfield, a life-size bear, stands guard by the door, in front of a large photograph of one of the lakes in the Canadian Rockies – bringing back fond memories of a long-ago holiday there. Tables are available inside, as well as a few outside on the footpath.

Brazen is clearly popular with the locals, and it is not difficult to see why. Everyone is made very welcome – it’s just like catching up with old friends. And with the added attraction of brownies and gelati.

All the gelati is made from raw ingredients – the only exception is the bubblegum flavour (popular with the kids). The 18 flavours can be served in cups, cones or with a brownie, as well as tubs to take away. There is also a range of smoothies as well as coffee and tea (in teapots!).

The brownies come in individual serves ($4.50) or family sized slabs ($15.00). The basic brownie – Wicked Chocolate Addiction – has several variations involving coconut, hazelnut and various toppings, as well as a gluten free version. There is also a salted caramel peanut brownie, a peanut butter brownie and a blondie (white chocolate brownie) with berries.

Of course we had to try the brownies, so both Benny and I opted for a brownie with a scoop of gelato, which required careful consideration (and taste testing) for matching flavours.

Benny chose the coconut brownie (“Escape to Coconut Island”) which he paired with strawberry gelato. I picked a hazelnut brownie, with raspberry gelato. Both brownies were warmed before serving, which was a nice touch.

The brownies were very good – although Benny, not normally known for his diplomatic skills, claimed that my home-made ones are better. The gelati was also excellent.

A special mention for Brazen’s passionfruit gelato – awesomely good with just the right balance of sweetness and acidity.

Our rating: excellentWith some of the best customer service we have experienced in Melbourne, it is an absolute pleasure to visit Brazen Dessert Bar. The gelato is excellent and of course the signature brownies are a real treat.
