It’s a big step, going from a gelato cart for hire to a shopfront gelateria. Since 2013 Bianco Latte has been serving up artisan gelato from its vintage Sicilian gelato cart. Four years and much gelato later, Bianco Latte opened its stylish little gelateria in Elwood Village.
It’s a small shop, right in the middle of the village action. There is room for only a couple of small tables, with some stools outside on the footpath. But the bright and cheery décor – and the super friendly service – make it a welcoming space.
The emphasis is on classic Italian gelato – all natural ingredients, no additives or preservatives, and made in-house every day. The 18 flavours on the menu – 12 dairy-based and six sorbetti – are stored in gleaming lidded pozzetti, maintaining freshness by reducing exposure to the air. Seasonal fruit, such as mangos, are purchased fresh, then frozen and stored, and so fans of the fruit flavours can enjoy their gelato fix out of season.
The gelato is served in cups or cones, or you can buy tubs of gelato to take away. We sampled several flavours – they were all fantastic, which didn’t make the selection process any easier.
Benny’s choice was pineapple and coconut sorbetto, paired with pistachio gelato. A great match of two excellent gelati.
I picked the passionfruit and lemon sorbetto, which I paired with coconut bounty. The sorbetto was outstanding, gorgeous texture and super intense fruity flavour. And the coconut bounty – with just a hint of chocolate – was a perfect counterpoint.
Outstanding gelato, in a charming village location. Worth making a trip to Elwood.
