Allora, Newmarket Qld

A few months ago we were in Brisbane. Benny’s brother hosted our stay, indulging our passion for exploring local gelato hotspots. Maybe there was an ulterior motive? He certainly scored some great gelato along the way.

Highlight of our trip? Well there were a few, but Allora was definitely up at the top of our list. It’s a modest place, tucked away at Newmarket Village, by the Enoggera Road entrance to the carpark.

With a sleek and minimalist design, the only splash of colour is from the gelato cabinet.  A few tables are available to relax over a coffee (or gelato!), or to enjoy something more substantial. Its modest café menu covers savory and sweet options, perfect for all-day breakfast dining. Avo on toast, chia pudding, acai bowl, Belgian waffles and fresh pastries. Coffee is from the Sydney roasters Single O.

A fruity combo from Allora: pineapple, passionfruit and mint sorbetto paired with a classic lemon sorbetto.

But we were there for the gelati. It’s made each morning in the Allora ‘factoria’ a few minutes away, then transported to the café. So the gelati is always fresh every day.

With a third generation gelatiere (gelato maker) in charge, our hopes for gelato excellence were high. However in our eagerness, we made a rookie error – rocking up to the café mid-morning before the daily delivery had arrived. According to the friendly servers, gelati is available from noon onwards.

Later that same day, we were back.

The daily gelato selection includes 16 flavours, with dairy and non-dairy options, as well as a couple of specials. Dairy-based gelato is made from Jersey milk and cream, while the non-dairy sorbetti celebrates fresh seasonal fruit. All served in cups, cones and tubs to take away, or sandwiched between Butterbing cookies (from Melbourne!) and in shakes.

I loved the pineapple, passionfruit and mint sorbetto, which I paired with an excellent lemon sorbetto.

Benny chose two of the specials – a rich dark chocolate and ginger gelato, with a fruity mandarin sorbetto.

Benny’s brother went for a double chocolate hit – dark chocolate and ginger, paired with raffaello gelato (white chocolate, coconut and almonds).

All were outstanding – gorgeous flavours, beautiful creamy textures. Gelato perfection – utter bliss.

Allora has now become the go-to gelateria for Benny’s brother!

Our rating: outstanding

Allora is a great example of gelato excellence – gorgeous gelati, generous serves and friendly service. It was a true highlight of our all-too-brief Brisbane trip. Definitely on our must-visit list for when we return!
