Miinot Gelato, Pascoe Vale South

There are some lucky Melbournians who live close to Miinot Gelato. Not us. We need to travel a long distance across town to visit this tiny all-white shop which is, hands down, one of the top gelaterie in Melbourne.

And so, in the face of a looming lockdown due to COVID-19, we took what could be our last chance – until the pandemic is behind us – to enjoy some of Miinot’s magnificent gelati.

Miinot does only gelati. No coffee, no shakes, no smoothies, no waffles, no brownies. Just gelati, awesomely good gelati.

Everything is crafted on-site. Flavours change every day, with hundreds of recipes in Miinot’s repertoire. The menu generally covers around a dozen flavours, including a couple of classics – maybe a chocolate gelato or a lemon sorbetto, always exceptional – but the rest of the menu makes use of seasonal produce and a talented chef’s sensibility to churn innovative and intriguing creations.

What should we choose today?

We love the quirky names, like Melon Colly (cantaloupe and blueberry), Flamin’ Galah (vegan dark chocolate with a generous slick of raspberry) and Monkey See Monkey Do (smoked peanut butter with peanut brittle and dark chocolate).

Part of a vibrant local community, Miinot creates new and exciting flavours from the shared bounty of the neighbourhood’s backyard gardens. Feijoa season is now underway, and a recent persimmon crop was very welcome.

A great match: vegan Basil Strawberry paired with Provence from Miinot Gelato
A great match: vegan Basil Strawberry paired with Provence.

It’s always a tough choice picking flavours at Miinot. My selection: vegan Basil Strawberry paired with Provence. Making a good gelato from watery fruit like strawberries is a real challenge, but Miinot’s is excellent, with the basil adding just a touch of warmth to give a more complex experience. It was a good complement for Provence – a nutty nougat based gelato with a subtle sprinkling of lavender to offset the sweetness of the nougat.

Benny matched a classic pistachio gelato with Dairy Goddess – pannacotta gelato swirled through with a thick butterscotch and Callebaut white chocolate pearls. Awesomely good.

Now the lockdown has commenced can we still buy gelati? Miinot remains open as at today (3 April), but with changed hours – we recommend checking times when planning a visit. Only one person is allowed in the shop at a time, and any queuing must observe social distancing. Home delivery is available in the local area (nup, we’re no way close enough for that).
